It's one of those regions that just delivers consistently incredible coffee, and this lot is no exception. This coffee hits you with sweetness right from the start, building into an intense, fruit-forward experience that lands somewhere between cranberry tartness and the rich, nutty sweetness of marzipan. It's balanced, approachable, and exactly what we want in a daily drinker.

More About The Coffee
Nariño is Colombia's southernmost coffee-growing region, bordering Ecuador and sitting in the shadow of the Andes. The dramatic slopes and valleys create a unique microclimate where warm, humid air from the lowlands rises up the mountains at night, allowing coffee to thrive at elevations much higher than most of the rest of the country—sometimes as high as 2,300 meters. This temperature modulation slows cherry maturation, giving the beans more time to develop complex sugars and bright acidity, which is exactly what makes Nariño coffees so distinctive.

The Castillo and Colombia varietals that make up this lot were both developed by Cenicafé, Colombia's national coffee research center, specifically to combat coffee leaf rust (la roya) while maintaining high cup quality. Castillo, released in 2005 and named after researcher Jaime Castillo, is a hybrid of Caturra and the Timor Hybrid, designed for disease resistance and high yield. The Colombia varietal, developed in the 1980s, shares similar goals. Both varietals have faced skepticism in the specialty coffee world due to their robusta heritage, but when grown with care at high altitudes and processed meticulously—as is the case here—they can produce exceptional, clean, fruit-forward cups.

This particular lot comes from smallholder producers in the Nariño region who bring their cherry to centralized washing stations for processing. The washed process highlights the coffee's natural brightness and clarity, stripping away the fruit to reveal the inherent sweetness of the seed. The result is a coffee that's approachable enough for everyday brewing but layered enough to keep things interesting cup after cup.

Farm: Kanzu, Rwanda

Notes: Lime, Dark Fruits, Black Tea

Processing: Washed

Elevation: 1,800-2,000 MASL

Varietal: Bourbon

Region: Kanzu, Rwanda

Color: Agtron 67 Whole Bean | 98 Ground

About
Our first venture into Rwandan coffee! Plumline comes from the Kanzu washing station in Nyamasheke, a region that sits along the western edge of the country near Lake Kivu. This lot brings lime acidity upfront, followed by deeper, darker fruit notes that give it weight and complexity, finishing with a black tea-like quality that lingers long after the cup is empty. It's the kind of coffee that works beautifully as a pour-over but also pulls a killer espresso if that's your thing.

More About The Coffee
The Kanzu washing station is located in the Nyamasheke district of Rwanda's Western Province, perched at around 1,836 meters above sea level. On clear days, you can see all the way down to Lake Kivu, which forms Rwanda's border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The station is surrounded by rolling green hills planted with coffee, cassava, sweet potato, sugar cane, bananas, and beans—a patchwork of smallholder farms where producers grow coffee alongside their food crops.

Kanzu processes cherry from hundreds of smallholder farmers, most of whom farm between one and two hectares. The Bourbon varietal that dominates this region is a natural mutation of Typica, brought to Rwanda decades ago and now the backbone of the country's specialty coffee production. Bourbon is known for its complex sweetness, bright acidity, and full body—qualities that thrive in Rwanda's high-altitude, mineral-rich volcanic soils.

Processing at Kanzu is meticulous. When cherry arrives at the station, it's floated to separate out lower-density beans, then pulped using a McKinnon disc pulper. The coffee undergoes a dry fermentation for 16-18 hours, allowing natural enzymes to break down the mucilage and develop flavor complexity. After fermentation, the remaining mucilage is washed off, and the coffee is soaked for up to 18 hours before being dried on raised mesh beds that allow for airflow from below. The entire process is designed to produce clean, vibrant, traceable lots that showcase the best of what Rwandan coffee has to offer.

Kanzu was taken over by Dormans in 2012, and since then, the company has invested heavily in infrastructure, farmer training, and quality control. The washing station employs about 50 local workers during the harvest season (March to July) and has become a hub for the surrounding community, offering not just employment but also a reliable market for smallholder producers who might otherwise struggle to access specialty buyers. The result is a coffee that tells the story of its place—a landscape of mist-covered mountains, volcanic soil, and a farming community deeply committed to quality.

Notes: Strawberry, Citrus, Tropical

Processing: Co-Ferment

Elevation: 1,750 MASL

Varietal: Caturra

Region: Quindío, Colombia

Color: Agtron 67 Whole Bean | 105 Ground

About
Wild June is our first co-ferment in a few years! His farm, El Placer (which translates to 'The Pleasure'), sits in the heart of Colombia's Eje Cafetero at 1,750 meters above sea level. He's a master of carbonic maceration and co-fermentation, with access to a well-equipped microbiological lab where he scientifically monitors fermentation at the molecular level. . After fermentation, the coffee was depulped and placed in tanks for an additional 72 hours of anaerobic fermentation with CO2 injection, where dehydrated strawberries and red fruit glucose were added with continuous pH monitoring. The coffee was then dried slowly under controlled conditions for around 20 days.

The result is a coffee that breaks the mold—intensely fruity, expressive, and unapologetically modern. We're stoked to be working with this lot, and we think you're going to love it as much as we do.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0669/1880/9901/files/8F9495A3-46B2-4216-959B-2EC0B83CF682.png?v=1777510212
grapevine
Grapevine

Notes: Grape, Florals, Chocolate

Processing: Washed

Elevation: 1,600-1,900 MASL

Varietal: Caturra

Region: Cajamarca, Peru

Color: Agtron 67 Whole Bean | 105 Ground

About
Grapevine is one of those coffees that sneaks up on you in the best way. The name is no accident—the first thing you'll notice is a distinctive grape note, almost wine-like, layered with delicate florals and a smooth chocolate finish. It's a Caturra from the high mountains of Cajamarca, Peru, and it brings everything we love about Peruvian washed coffee: clean, balanced, sweet, and full-bodied. This one drinks beautifully across the board—pour-over, espresso, even a French press. A great daily driver that still surprises you.

More About The Coffee
Cajamarca sits in the rugged Andean highlands of northern Peru and is responsible for around 43% of the country's coffee production. The region's combination of high elevation, fertile volcanic soils, and dramatic temperature swings between day and night creates ideal conditions for growing complex, expressive coffees. Cherries mature slowly in the cool mountain air, building depth and sweetness over months of patient ripening before they're ready for harvest.

Most coffee in Cajamarca comes from smallholder farmers working two to three hectares of land. Many practice organic farming as part of larger cooperatives that have transformed Peruvian specialty coffee over the past decade. While farmers here historically worked independently—often without access to specialty buyers—the rise of cooperatives like Lima Coffees and other women-led producer groups has dramatically improved both quality and traceability across the region.

The Caturra variety that makes up this lot is a natural mutation of Bourbon, first discovered in Brazil and now grown widely throughout Latin America. It's known for high yields and bright, clean acidity—qualities that thrive in Cajamarca's high-altitude conditions. After harvest, cherries are depulped the same day, then given a 12-18 hour open-air fermentation in the cool mountain temperatures (which sometimes extends longer at higher elevations). The coffee is then washed clean of mucilage and dried slowly, often in solar tents that protect the beans while allowing for even moisture release over 16-20 days.

What you get in the cup is a reflection of all that careful work: a coffee with the structural integrity of a washed Latin American but the expressive fruit and floral character of something more experimental. Peru has all the conditions to produce world-class coffee—high elevation, classic varieties, smallholders committed to quality—and lots like this one are proof of what's possible when origin, processing, and producer all line up just right.
